2011 ACADEMY AWARDS
OSCAR PREDICTIONS by:
-
Larry "Bocepheus" Evans
-Jim "Good Old JR" Rutkowski
The 2011 Academy Awards are coming up and our two media opinion makers "BO" & "JR" have their predictions all set for Oscar Night. How close will they be? We'll find out on Sunday February 27th.
BO-The 83rd Annual Academy Awards are tonight and the hosts are James Franco and Anne Hathaway (yes, the Green Goblin and Catwoman). This year's ceremony is supposed to be tighter and may come in at less than three hours but I doubt it. The nomination breakdown was as follows:
JR-This year I have nothing additional to contribute to the nominee's chosen by the Academy or my picks for the winners. Last year I picked 11 winners out of 11 categories and I am confident in my choices below for this year, so I'm standing on my record. Refer to my reviews on each film (linked below) or my Outhouse video with Mister Bo for more illumination on my picks.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter,
KINGS SPEECH
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Hailee Steinfeld,
TRUE GRIT
Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

BO-Even though Leo has taken out ads to push herself as the winner I am going with Steinfeld because she is actually the lead of the film and holds her own in every scene she is in.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: Hailee Steinfeld, TRUE GRIT
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: Hailee Steinfeld, TRUE GRIT
2011 WINNER: Melissa Leo, The Fighter
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Christian Bale, "The Fighter"
John Hawkes,
WINTER'S BONE
Jeremy Renner,
THE TOWN
Mark Ruffalo, "The Kids Are All Right"
Geoffrey Rush,
KINGS SPEECH

BO-Bale gives us a performance here that has the audience focused on waiting to see what he is going to do next. It isn't the fact that he loses weight again for a role it's the fact that even though he was born in Wales we believe he was born and raised in Boston.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: Christian Bale, "The Fighter"
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: Geoffrey Rush, KINGS SPEECH
2011 WINNER: Christian Bale, "The Fighter"
BEST ACTRESS:
Annette Bening, "The Kids Are All Right"
Nicole Kidman, "Rabbit Hole"
Jennifer Lawrence,
WINTER'S BONE
Natalie Portman,
BLACK SWAN
Michelle Williams, "Blue Valentine"

BO-Portman may win this year and defy both of our choices and if she does I will not have a problem with that but I believe Bening will win for her body of work and a quality performance.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: Annette Bening, "The Kids Are All Right"
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: Annette Bening, "The Kids Are All Right"
2011 WINNER: Natalie Portman, BLACK SWAN
BEST ACTOR:
Javier Bardem, "Biutiful"
Jeff Bridges,
TRUE GRIT
Jesse Eisenberg,
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Colin Firth,
KINGS SPEECH
James Franco,
127 HOURS

BO-I have not seen King's Speech and have no plans to but the consensus has him winning so I will go with the flow but actually think Franco should win this year. He is in every scene and for the most part the only person on screen.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: Colin Firth, KINGS SPEECH
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: Colin Firth, KINGS SPEECH
2011 WINNER: Colin Firth, KINGS SPEECH
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY:
BLACK SWAN  Matthew Libatique
INCEPTION Wally Pfister
KINGS SPEECH Danny Cohen
THE SOCIAL NETWORK Jeff Cronenweth
TRUE GRIT Roger Deakins

BO-Deakins as far as I know has never won the award and should take the nod here. The dark horse would be Pfister for the look of Inception.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: TRUE GRIT Roger Deakins
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: TRUE GRIT Roger Deakins
2011 WINNER: INCEPTION Wally Pfister
BEST ORIGINAL SONG:
"Coming Home" from Country Strong Music and Lyric by Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey
"I See the Light" from Tangled Music by Alan Menken, Lyric by Glenn Slater
"If I Rise" from
127 HOURS Music by A.R. Rahman, Lyric by Dido and Rollo Armstrong
"We Belong Together" from
TOY STORY 3 Music and Lyric by Randy Newman

BO-My rule of Oscar winners in this category is that if Randy Newman is nominated then the award is his.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: "We Belong Together" from TOY STORY 3
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: "Coming Home" from Country Strong
2011 WINNER: "We Belong Together" from TOY STORY 3 Music and Lyric by Randy Newman
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE:
"How to Train Your Dragon," John Powell
INCEPTION Hans Zimmer
KINGS SPEECH Alexandre Desplat
127 HOURS A.R. Rahman
THE SOCIAL NETWORK Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

BO-Reznor's score is understated and yet effective so he and Ross will walk away with the statue. I do remember parts of Zimmer's score but was more of a fan of the music from the former front man from Nine Inch Nails.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
2011 WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
"Another Year," Written by Mike Leigh
"The Fighter," Screenplay by Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson, Story by Keith Dorrington & Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson
INCEPTION Written by Christopher Nolan
"The Kids Are All Right," Written by Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg
KINGS SPEECH  Screenplay by David Seidler

BO-King's Speech may end up running the table but there have been questions about the accuracy of the story. I am going with Nolan because his idea is original.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: INCEPTION Written by Christopher Nolan
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: KINGS SPEECH  Screenplay by David Seidler
2011 WINNER: KINGS SPEECH  Screenplay by David Seidler
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
127 HOURS Screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy
THE SOCIAL NETWORK Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin
TOY STORY 3 Screenplay by Michael Arndt, Story by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich
TRUE GRIT Written for the screen by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen
WINTER'S BONE Adapted for the screen by Debra Granik & Anne Rosellini

BO-First off, why is Toy Story in this category since the film is not adapted from a book or play? With that rant out of the way anyone who has read Accidental Billionaires knows the book doesn't exactly suggest it could be adapted into a movie so I am going with Sorkin.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin
2011 WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM:
"How to Train Your Dragon," Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
"The Illusionist," Sylvain Chomet
TOY STORY 3 Lee Unkrich

BO-If you only pick three films then I question the existence of the category. With that, Toy Story 3 is the obvious winner.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: TOY STORY 3 Lee Unkrich
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: TOY STORY 3 Lee Unkrich
2011 WINNER: TOY STORY 3 Lee Unkrich
BEST DIRECTOR:

Darren Aronofsky, BLACK SWAN
David O. Russell, "The Fighter"
Tom Hooper,
KINGS SPEECH
David Fincher,
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Joel and Ethan Coen,
TRUE GRIT

BO-The trend is that if the Director's guild gives you the award then the Oscar is yours. The DGA picked Hooper. I pick Fincher for what I believe is the best film of the year and the fact that Hooper is new and may win the Oscar at some point but not this early in his career.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: David Fincher, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: Tom Hooper, KINGS SPEECH
2011 WINNER: Tom Hooper, KINGS SPEECH
BEST PICTURE:
BLACK SWAN  A Protozoa and Phoenix Pictures Production, Mike Medavoy, Brian Oliver and Scott Franklin, Producers
"The Fighter," A Relativity Media Production, David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Mark Wahlberg, Producers
INCEPTION A Warner Bros. UK Services Production, Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, Producers
"The Kids Are All Right," An Antidote Films, Mandalay Vision and Gilbert Films Production, Gary Gilbert, Jeffrey Levy-Hinte and Celine Rattray, Producers
KINGS SPEECH  A See-Saw Films and Bedlam Production, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers
127 HOURS An Hours Production, Christian Colson, Danny Boyle and John Smithson, Producers
THE SOCIAL NETWORK A Columbia Pictures Production, Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca and Cean Chaffin, Producers
TOY STORY 3 A Pixar Production, Darla K. Anderson, Producer
TRUE GRIT  A Paramount Pictures Production, Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, Producers
WINTER'S BONE  A Winter's Bone Production, Anne Rosellini and Alix Madigan-Yorkin, Producers

BO-I am not going to see King's Speech and am not going to join the parade of picking a film that to me looks like an episode of Masterpiece Theater or something that HBO could have made. The Social Network is an amazing film and should win the Oscar. I would also be happy if Inception walked away with the little gold guy.
BO'S PICK FOR WINNER: THE SOCIAL NETWORK
JR'S PICK FOR WINNER: KINGS SPEECH
2011 WINNER: KINGS SPEECH  A See-Saw Films and Bedlam Production, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers
FINAL TALLEY:
BO PICKED: 6 of 12 WINNERS
JR PICK 7 of 12 WINNERS
