HBO
told the cast and crew of the $10 million pilot for a Game of Thrones prequel
series, that it is not being picked up. The now series was set to take place
thousands of years prior to the events of the original. The cast included: Naomi
Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Georgie
Henley, Miranda Richardson and John Simm. It was co-created by Jane Goldman and
George R.R. Martin. Both wrote the story and Goldman would have been the
showrunner for the series, which would have been called The Long Night. For the
moment HBO is going forward with House of the Dragon, which will be set 300
years before Thrones and tell the story of the House Targaryen and the last
great war involving dragons. Martin wanted fans to know that HBO didn’t kill
Long Night just so they could do Dragon because HBO has more money than they
know what to do with. He also revealed that he is working on finishing The Winds
of Winter, which will offer different ending for some of the characters from
Thrones. Martin will not write any planned Thrones spin-offs until the book is
done.
