UFC
244 should have had a UFC welterweight championship fight between Kamaru Usman
and Colby Covington but it didn’t happen. Covington said it’s not his fault but
he thinks he is being treated unfairly. Usman vs. Covington was expected to
headline UFC 224 on Nov. 2 in New York City but negotiations stalled and so UFC
president Dana White booked the main event of Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal.
Covington told MMA Fighting, “What happened exactly was the UFC came to me and
offered me a basic challenger’s rate. I said no, I’m not challenging. I’m
champion. I’ve never lost, I just defended my title. I’ve put my life on the
line for this company. Went to Brazil, said outlandish things where people
literally wanted to kill me and I had gangs coming after me and they still want
to come at me with this basic challenger, entry fee type money? I’m standing up
for what’s right.” To some Covington is getting what he deserves since he
refused to defend his interim UFC welterweight title by deciding to have nasal
surgery instead of fighting Tyron Woodley at UFC 228 in September of 2018. He
was then stripped of the interim belt. Covington is also claiming that Usman
doesn’t want to fight him anyway.
