Gail Simone Takes a Run at the "Death Defying Devil" at Dynamite

Twenty years before Marvel’s Daredevil was created another person carried the name. Lev Gleason Publications’ Daredevil was created by Jack Binder and Jack Cole in 1940. The man in the costume was Bart Hill, who was a mute. He got pushed out of his own title and the book was cancelled. Eventually the name became public domain but legally could be used using different versions of the name. In 2008 Dynamite Entertainment shipped a new title calling the character the Death-Defying ‘Devil. Gail Simone and her Red Sonja/Tarzan partner Walter Geovani are the latest to take a shot at the character in an all new limited series. In the title the 'Devil finds himself in a boarding house that’s under siege. And the residents will get no help from the cops since they have been paid off to look the other way. Simone decided to add the twist by giving everyone in the house has a secret. Her take on the 'Devil is akin to DC’s Wildcat who only needs the space to fight in. If fans like what she has done with the character then she has ideas of placing him in other genres where he doesn’t belong. Since in his original series he got pushed out of by the comedic kid sidekicks of his own book she thinks placing him in bizarre settings would work well.
