More than just a "Black Thing"...

COMICBOOKMAN SEZ: After two weeks of chewing over comics for little girls and comics for women I'd be remiss not to touch another under-represented demographic: African-American comics. It's Black History month and to celebrate we've chosen our entire collection of trade paperbacks featuring African American characters for our Hero of the Month Sale. Unlike other stores, we stock one of the largest selections of comics and trades featuring Black characters in the city. For years, our "AFRICAN AMERICAN" section has featured the likes of Miles Morales, Mr.Terrific, D'Jango, War Machine and others. Not too many others, however, because African American characters share at least one thing in common with female comic characters: there's not a lot of them. That is to say there aren't a lot of them headlining books. In fact, while there are a fair number of Black supporting characters in most books (from Robbie Robertson to Lucius Fox), there are currently only about a Baker's Dozen worth of characters who have proved capable of carrying a monthly series for any length of time. Most of whom it should be noted are not currently in print.

While good stories should always take precedence over "character quotas" the lack of diversity in current mainstream comics is hard to overlook. Over the last few years both Marvel and DC have taken runs at diversifying their lines with mixed results. Marvel seems less interested in actually creating new characters than they are with "swapping out the brands" and turning traditionally white characters into fresh, new African American versions. Dr.Voodoo (formerly Brother Voodoo) replacing Dr.Strange as Master of the Mystic Arts, Sam Wilson replacing Steve Rogers as Captain America, Sam Jackson replacing David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury-you get my point. On the other hand, DC generally creates new characters to their universe

when they have a diversification push. Some being Batwing added to the Batman Family or Cyborg pushed into the top tier as a founding member of the New 52 Justice League, Earth 23 in the DC Multiverse. Arguably this last example is more akin to Marvel's "brand swapping", but there is something unique about doing it on a global scale with a parallel earth. I wonder if Earth 23 has a Jeff Pierce aka: "White Lightning"?

Anyway, these and other creative moves are all fine attempts at diversity, but as with comics featuring credible female characters - more work needs to be done. Black Panther or Wonder Woman can appeal to readers across the spectrum and still retain their unique flavor just as Superman or Spiderman have for years appealed across all

demographic groups. The Wakanda King T'Challa is the king of a nation first, an African second and a superhero third. Shakespeare was writing about "heavy hangs the head with a crown" four hundred years ago because it is the grist for good storytelling. That aspect of the character is universal and has the potential for story development across all demographic lines. Same with John Stewart, who in one part of his life deals with problems in the inner city but can just as quickly finds himself arbitrating a space battle above a planet in the Alpha Centauri star system. The appeal of any character should be universal with everything else being "sauce for the goose". That's the road that needs to be taken for more diversity.

From my perspective, there is only so much a dealer can do because we are at the tail end of the food chain. We can't carry what's not being made and to that end publishers need to be more diverse and promote good stories featuring a variety of characters (female, black, Hispanic, etc) to all demographic groups. Creators need to be more daring while still crafting characters and storylines for a mass audience. And, of course, dealers need to carry these books once they are made. However, there is one final link in this creative food chain and that is you. Customers need to take a chance and buy these books once they come out. Our "1st Day Sale" is designed to soften the economic blow of trying something new. Each week, I always make a point of sticking at least one or two titles into that mix; something different you should take a chance on. If you don't buy them, then dealers won't order them and publishers won't solicit creators to make them.

At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits each month. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a pretty accurate representation of the week in comics nationwide.

Two weeks ago 180 books shipped, last week 136 books arrived and this week 167. The February shipping rollercoaster continues as the TOP 5 starts off again with DC taking 1st Place with thirty four titles (ten more than last week). 2nd, 3rd and 4th Place are an anomaly this week as they come in with a three way tie between Dynamite, Marvel and Image respectively. Each company is shipping twenty-four titles and their ranking is determined by MSRP totals of the books each company is shipping (see the chart below for the breakdown). 5th Place is snagged by BOOM with ten titles this week. 1st through 5th's totals are are all up from last week however Indy Comics are down compared to last week. Fifty one Indy titles arrive this Wednesday with Dark Horse placing in 6th Place, Avatar in 7th Place with nine titles and Zenescope in 8th Place with eight titles.
Overall, eighteen different publishers are responsible for this weeks 167 titles.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: Image releases a new superhero team, Marvel loses one heroine but gains another, penultimate issue of a Vertigo powerhouse, Uncle Sam kicks some Master race butt and more for the third week of February 2015. Over their nearly quarter century of publishing, Image has done its share of team books. Of late, their team titles have run along the lines of Morning Glories - no costumes but lots of characterization. This week Image brings back the traditional superhero team with SECRET IDENTITIES #1, our 40% Off all week long Book of the Week. The creative team of Brian Joines & Jay Faerber and artists Ilias Kyriazis & Charlie Kirchoff craft the tale of a super group known as The Front Line who have just invited new hero Crosswind to join them. What they don't know is that Crosswind is a mole sent to learn all their secrets, and the Front Line have LOTS of secrets. Also from Image this week, and 40% Off this Wednesday, is MANIFEST DESTINY #13 by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts. If you were looking to jump onto this title this is the perfect point. A new story arc begins as the expedition discovers another arch, which can only signal new trouble, while Sacagawea experiences complications with her pregnancy. Meanwhile, over at Marvel, SHE-HULK #12 closes out the fifth(?), sixth (?) volume of the jade lawyer of the Marvel Universe. If past is prologue you can expect another series featuring Jen sometime soon. Replacing her on the racks is the Spider Verse hit Cindy Moon in SILK #1 by writer Robbie Thompson (writer from TV's Supernatural) and new artist Stacey Lee. 40% Off this Wednesday, SILK #1 opens with Cindy on her own in New York City searching for her past, defining her own future and webbing up wrong-doers along the way. Over at DC, JUSTICE LEAGUE #39 features the conclusion to the "Amazo Virus" storyline with haunting consequences. Also from DC, Vertigo is about to lose their second longest continuing series as FABLES #149 also ships. This issue marks the second from last issue of this landmark series and the final standard size comic issue. Issue #150 (or its equivalent) has been promised to be a graphic novel sized finale! Dynamite has its share of events this week with RED SONJA #100 being at the top of the list. With five covers and a $7.99 cover price this marks ten years and 100 ongoing issues of the She-Devil with a sword. KING MANDRAKE MAGICIAN #1 is 40% Off this Wednesday and marks the King Features Magicians debut at Dynamite. Meanwhile, LEGENDERRY GREEN HORNET #1 marks the steampunk Brit Reid's return to the Legenderry Universe and PATHFINDER ORIGINS #1 is this years offering form the popular game. Down in the Indy Pit this week we have Dark Horse's EI8HT #1 (OF 5) OUTCAST by writer/artist Rafael Albuquerque with an assist from writer Mike Johnson. Welcome to the Meld, an inhospitable dimension in time where Joshua, a chrononaut, finds himself trapped. With no memory or feedback from the team of scientists that sent him, he can't count on anything but his heart and a stranger's voice to guide him to his destiny. Look for it to be 40% Off this Wednesday.
