Not The He-Man Woman Haters Club II...
COMICBOOKMAN SEZ:  Last week I went on at some length about the woeful state of comics for both little girls  teenage girls in the comics industry today. It was prompted by the on-line article: What Taking My Daughter to a Comic Book Store Taught Me written by a dad who took his sons and daughter to their local comic shop for the first time. While we do what we can at Alternate Reality to carry and spotlight comics for girls of all ages, ultimately we can only work with what's available. I wrote last week about comics for pre-teens but I'm backing out of writing anything about comics for teenage girls and up. That's right, Comicbookman is going back on his word. Instead I'm dumping it in the lap of my Girl Friday here at the store: Sarah Kay who can do a much better job of writing about what's out there for young girls than a fifty-something man. So take it away, Sarah...
Known to those reading this, comic books are not a genre – but a medium in which to write material and tell stories of any genre imaginable. Primarily, comics produced by publishers DC and Marvel are told through the use of superheroes. These books typically are portraying male power fantasies and providing satisfaction of wish fulfillment through escapism. It’s like school age children pretending to be the Justice League on a summer afternoon in their backyards. They pretend they’re a superhero in a world they create, and it is a world they can control to have several hours of happy play in the sunshine. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. These ideas, however, tend to be accompanied by anatomically impossible body types for people to achieve. For a reference example of what I am talking about, see Rob Liefeld’s artwork. Those body types (albeit less exaggerated than what Mr.Liefeld portrays) are applicable to men and women in comics. Kids grow up seeing these bodies and think they can achieve them, which can contribute to self-image issues when they cannot attain those physiques. They are over exaggerated and impossible not only because of muscle mass but because of the weight capacity a human skeleton can sustain without causing joint troubles, especially when you consider the physical beating these characters take on a consistent basis.

Though both men and women are held to ridiculous body ideals in comics, women do not generally desire the portrayal they have in comics because they are not the target audience in readership – we will touch upon that point later. For now, however, we are going to address the fact that male power fantasies do not apply to women and therefore they would prefer to see something else. For example, women in comics frequently look like they have walked out of a swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated or off the catwalk at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Women do not want to see that. These characters are frequently drawn with tall, slender figures and waists so small that there is no way their abdominal organs can be functioning properly, let alone even exist. Recall for a moment the cover poses of Spiderwoman #1 or Amazing Spiderman #601. Spines DO NOT work like that! I addressed in the previous paragraph about upper bodies being ridiculously disproportioned beyond possibility, and it is no wonder that teen girls, despite a recent spike of readership due to superheroes in pop culture, do not stroll in as frequently as their male peers on Wednesdays.

However, as I previously stated for discussion, there are several books that teen girls can, will and most definitely do enjoy. Women are more than half the world’s population; yet, they represent only a small fraction of the readership in comics. Imagine how much money the industry would make if a wider range of content was published that catered to the interests of the other half of the world. For example, story based content of a multitude of genres told without superheroes. Yes, there are women who enjoy that content and I am most definitely not devaluing their voices or interests. Still, I maintain my argument that story based material appeals more to a wider audience of women. I happen to be one of those women. A lot of the content Image is publishing currently interests me. Part of the appeal is that it doesn’t matter if I know years of anthology of a character, what Stan Lee’s real name is nor many of the things that the “Boys Club” already knows. That is something that happens to disenchant readership.

What Image is producing now is what Vertigo used to create before their flow of content slowed. Image was more than happy to pick up the ideas and boost their sales. Actually, some of the first content I read came from DC’s 2007-8 imprint Minx. They published a range of comics aimed at teen girls that I would suggest they check out. Many independent publishers, Marvel and DC produce adaptations of TV shows such as Doctor Who, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries – all of which serve as a jumping on point into comics for teens. They’re already familiar with the characters and content of the story, but it is a medium in which to engage with their favorite shows in a different manner. I am so very passionate about increasing readership and literacy in general, and so I have compiled the following list of ten series that I think teen girls would enjoy.

 9. X-Men, particularly the 2013 all women series (Marvel)
10. Wonder Woman (DC)








 
  At Alternate Reality, we order 99.9% of the comics PREVIEWS solicits each month. Keep that in mind as you read the numbers below; they not only break down our week, but they're also a pretty accurate representation of the week in comics nationwide.

Drop-drop-drop as the TOP 5 for this weeks take a takes a successive series of big steps down from First to Fourth place in this overall smaller shipping week. A smaller week equals smaller totals with DC taking 1st Place with twenty four titles, a total that would not have netted them a second place showing last week. Marvel drops into 2nd Place with nineteen titles. Dropping down again to 3rd Place with fourteen titles is Image. IDW and BOOM battle it out for 4th and 5th Place respectively with eight titles apiece this week. Their rankings were determined by the overall number of units each is shipping to the store on Wednesday. They both may be sending out eight titles each but we're getting in more IDW's than we are BOOM's. In spite of the smaller week INDY COMICS hold their own with sixty-three titles, losing only one title this week from last week. Parsing out the Indies Dark Horse, Valiant, Avatar and Zenescope all tie for 6th Place with seven titles apiece. As with last week there are a total of twenty one Indy publishers with a cumulative total of twenty six publishers shipping this week, so if you can't find any variety on the racks you're not looking hard enough.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: Vader finally gets his own solo, ongoing, unabridged title, Harley gets yet another special and Cavewoman shipping two, count'em - TWO NEW BOOKS in the same week are some of the highlights for the second shipping week of February 2015. While at Dark Horse the Star Wars franchise had more mini-series than you could shake a womp rat at, the dark lord of the sith himself had a few. STAR WARS DARTH VADER & NINTH ASSASSIN, STAR WARS DARTH VADER GHOST PRISON,  STAR WARS DARTH VADER AND THE HAM ON RYE to name just a few. Leave it to Marvel to finally give him is own ongoing series without a subtitle. Our 40% Off all week long Book of the Week is DARTH VADER #1 by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca. It will tell of the Empire's fight against the Rebellion from the bad guys point of view. Also of note from the House of Ideas this week is AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14. as it is the final chapter (if you don't count the upcoming Epilogue issues) of the Spider-Verse Saga. The Prophecy is coming to fruition but Superior Spider-Man has something up his sleeve. A metallic tentacle perhaps? Meanwhile DC's Deadpool gets another special with the HARLEY QUINN VALENTINES DAY SPECIAL by writers Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti and artist John Timms. No scratch and sniff gimmick this time but it does come with two parallel variant covers and a 40% Discount this Wednesday. If you missed Image's surprise hit THEY'RE NOT LIKE US #1 there's a big old second print shipment from the Mighty I arriving this week so you can see what all the fuss was about. Not the kids book of the week (sorry guys, just "Let It Go") but definitely in contention is BOOM! Comics HELP US GREAT WARRIOR #1 by writer/artist Madéleine Flores. Spinning out of her web comic, it's about a very powerful Great Warrior who protects her village from evildoers, but most of all written by a female creator. Sounds like something the girls may want to take a look at. Down in the Indy Pit for this week we have Valiant's DIVINITY #1 (OF 4) writer Matt Kindt and artist Trevor Hairsine. It's the Cold War and the Soviet Union sends an astronaut off into a deep space mission. Lost in the stars, he encountered something unknown. Something that...changed him. Returning to earth he has the powers of a god but apparently no enlightened insights because he's still a communist! GASP! Being the capitalists that we are, it's 40% Off this Wednesday. Also 40% Off this Wednesday is PROMETHEUS FIRE & STONE OMEGA ONE SHOT from Dark Horse. Angela and her fellow survivors are stranded on LV-223, but their mission is not over yet. The answer to their quest could be hidden deep underground, but the strangest nightmare of all stands in their way. Finally we have not one but two, big, flopping Cavewoman books this week form the fine folks at Amryl. The mini series CAVEWOMAN ZOMBIE SITUATION #1 features writer/artist Devon Massey having Meriem cashing in on the current zombie craze. Meanwhile writer/artist Rob Durham is the creative force behind the other Cavewoman mini that starts this week: CAVEWOMAN THE RETURN #1. Stand by for action and adventure as upon Meriem's return to Marshville, she is informed that Bruce is still alive. After that shocking revelation the action really heats up!
