"Torres succeeds in fooling us that Priest wrote the book..."

Review by Lawrence Evans

Guest creative team J.Torres and new talent contest winner Ryan Bodenheim finish their short run on this title with a tale from the Panther’s past. You may be drawn in by the Liam Sharp cover image but that visual never happens inside the book.

Torres follows the Priest writing style by separating the story into small arcs that dance around the timeline while telling the tale. Panther is protecting a friend of his, King Akaje and his family as they visit New York. Everett K. Ross is trying to keep things on an even keel but things are never smooth when Ross is involved so we find ourselves in the middle of a family drama with magical overtones. Torres succeeds in fooling us that Priest wrote the book since he hits the same beats while giving the two-issue stint his own personal touches.

Bodenheim got this assignment after being discovered during Marvel’s talent search that culminated at both Comicon International and Wizard World Chicago. He shows promise but needs more experience. Visually I would say that his pencil work bears a strong similarity to occasional X-Men artist Tom Derenick.

You would expect sales to drop on this already low selling title since it will end in July but do the creators a favor and hang in there until the last light goes out, will you? Besides, Panther will be a regular character in the new series, the Crew and still be an Avenger so it’s not as if he’s really going anywhere.
