HBO MAX HAS BIG PLANS
Posted: 020420

It Will Launch with a Higher Monthly Fee But Exponentially More Content

The upcoming HBO Max streaming service will carry more than the just launched Disney+ service. One of the main reasons for that is HBO carries more adult-targeted content. And the added content is why the service will cost more than Disney+. HBO Max will be free to AT&T premium video customers so most of the current 33 million U.S. subscribers to HBO will automatically be upgraded to HBO Max. HBO Max will get a domestic launch in May 2020 with the plan of getting 50 million domestic subscribers and 75-90 million worldwide by 2025. There will be 10,000 hours of content included in the launch which contains HBO, Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth and Looney Tunes. More details to come shortly. The service will cost $14.99 per month and not include ads until 2021. Original shows will be called MAX Originals and those shows will be released weekly. You will be able to set up individual and group profiles but your suggestions will only cover your individual profile so what your daughter watches will not create a suggestion for similar shows for you. Subscribers will also be allowed to download content for offline viewing. The initial launch will contain 31 MAX Original series and 36 HBO Originals. 2021 will lift that to 50 MAX Original series and 38 HBO Originals by 2021. Some of the original shows will be Ridley Scott’s Raised by Wolves, about two androids raising human children on a mysterious planet; DC Superhero High, a new half-hour live-action comedy series from Elizabeth Banks about a group of teenagers attending a boarding school for gifted children; Robert Zemeckis animation/live-action series called Tooned Out; the prehistoric animated comedy The Fungies; the kids show Tig N’ Seek; four new Adventure Time specials; Station Eleven, Made for Love, Circe, Americanah; Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern and DC anthology series Strange Adventures; Michael Mann’s Tokyo Vice; Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco’s Flight Attendant; Anna Kendrick in Love Life; a Gossip Girl revival, season two of Doom Patrol; the TV musical spin-off Grease: Rydell High; the female rap group comedy Rap Sh-t, and Mindy Kaling’s single-camera dorm comedy College Girls. We will also get eighty new Looney Tunes shorts, the new Hanna Barbera series Jellystone, the revival of The Boondocks and the four new unscripted shows: Generation Hustle, Legendary, First Dates Hotel, new content from The Bachelor and five new comedy specials presented by Conan O’Brien. Not mentioned are the adaptation of DMZ from Ava DuVernay, the upcoming film TV series tie-in Dune: The Sisterhood, a Gremlins prequel series, the Shelly Society and a continuation of Search Party. HBO Max will run all seasons of The Big Bang Theory, the new Doctor Who, Friends, Rick and Morty, South Park and The West Wing. All of the Warners films, all of the MGM films, all of the Criterion films and everything seen on Turner Classic Movies. There will be 10 MAX Originals films a year and all 40 years of DC Films will be on the service on day one.
