American Gods’ Orlando Jones, who played Mr.
Nancy on the show confirmed in a video posted to Twitter that he was fired from
the Starz fantasy series in September. He then blamed third season showrunner
Charles “Chic” Eglee for it, saying said the new season’s showrunner is
“Connecticut-born and Yale-educated, so he’s very smart, and he thinks that Mr.
Nancy’s angry, get s— done is the wrong message for black America. That’s right,
this white man sits in that decision-making chair and I’m sure he has many black
BFFs that are his advisers and made it clear to him that if they did not get rid
of that angry god Mr. Nancy, he’d start a Denmark Vesey uprising in this
country.” Eglee took the high road and simply said the character didn’t fit the
tone for the season and so he was dropped. It’s another in a series of issues
with the show which had fired showrunners Bryan Fuller (season one) and Michael
Green (before season two even started). Both had problems with the production
company Fremantle US over budget and creative direction. So Jones took his
firing and decided to make a racial thing about it which meant he wasn’t really
paying attention to the fact that the show lives in total chaos.
