Along
with his work at Marvel Mark Waid is also the Director of Creative Development
on H1, the new super powered comic line from Humanoids. He developed the line
with Humanoids CCO John Cassaday and creators including Kwanza Osajyefo, Carla
Speed McNeil and Yanick Paquette. This line will not include a series of graphic
novels but actual comics. It will begin with Ignited from Waid, Osajyefo and
artist Phil Briones. Readers got a hint of what the line will be on Free Comic
Book Day. Waid was brought into the mix after the concept was decided to tell of
a world in which supposedly random people get superhuman powers and abilities in
times of extreme global stress. The people who get the powers want to make the
world a better place but when the team is formed in Ignited the world happens to
not have any super villains yet. He and Cassaday will work together for the
first time even though Waid first reviewed fan-John’s portfolio at a convention
in the ‘90s. Paquette designed all the individual characters even though he has
never shown any interest in using characters with capes and costumes. In the
first book of the line Ignited will show a small group of high school kids who
were survivors of a domestic terror attack and now have superpowers. They begin
a grass-roots movement against gun violence that pushes them to levels they
didn’t expect. The line will add Strangelands and include other H1 projects that
aren’t part of the shared universe: Meyer (a crime story starring gangster Meyer
Lansky), The Big Country (a Texas noir murder mystery), and Nicnevin and the
Bloody Queen, a supernatural horror tale. |
