Always observed on the first Saturday in May, Free Comic Book Day is the
day where each person who visits a participating shop is guaranteed one free
comic book from a selection of that years FCBD titles. Of course at Alternate
Reality it’s always been “one of every title” but that’s just the way we roll.
Anyway, Diamond Comic Distributors had announced the 47 titles set for FCBD 2020
which this year was scheduled for May 2nd 2020. Then Diamond
announced that Free Comic Book Day 2020 was officially postponed. This was done
to employ an abundance of caution over an event which is designed to bring large
number of people into the relatively small space of a comic book store. Almost
immediately there were rumors that Diamond Comics was considering changing FCBD
2020 into a month long celebration called “Free Comic Book May”. Retailers could
pick their date (or dates) in the month of May to celebrate and design FCBD
events around. All estimates of the spread of Corvid-19 then predicted that by
May 2nd it will still be around but hopefully on either a downward
slope or at least with a flattened out infection rate. Then on Thursday 031820
Diamond officially postponed Free Comic Book Day again, with Steve Geppi,
Chairman and founder of Diamond, saying:
“With restaurants and other businesses closing and many
areas implementing event restrictions, we know that Free Comic Book Day will be
impacted to varying degrees throughout the world. The severity and timing of
that impact can't be predicted with any certainty, but the safety of our
retailers and fans is too important to risk. With that in mind, we have made the
difficult decision to postpone the event to a date later in the summer. As
always, we appreciate your enthusiasm for and support of the comic industry's
best event and look forward to celebrating with you later in the Summer!”
So look for the 2020 Free Comic Book Day later
this year.
