Best of Times/Worst of Times...
COMICBOOKMAN SEZ: Lots of comic book media stories this week in the news. CBS announced an ongoing Supergirl series, TBS announced an ongoing Teen Titans series, Gotham is starting this week on Fox, Flash is coming soon to the CW, Constantine to NBC, SHIELD returns with Agent Carter to ABC and Arrow is returning with it's third season to the CW. Meanwhile at the cinema, Marvel movies have collectively passed the seven billion dollar mark in gross revenues and there are more comic-to-film movies slated for production than you can count on both hands and all ten toes (assuming they all happen). The last time comics had anywhere this high a profile was in 1966. For folks my age, that era is viewed through honey colored glasses of nostalgia; Superman was on Broadway, Batman and soon to be Green Hornet were on ABC. Both Marvel and DC characters were all over Saturday mornings and comics were emerging out of the dark juvenile delinquency charges of the 50's and into the sunshiny POW! BAM! SOCK! "pop art" acceptance of the 60's. It burned hot and fast and before we knew it it was over. But being totally honest 1966's heady mass marketing accomplishments can't compare with 2014's. Comics were a pop curiosity in the 60's and today they are (for good or ill) a cultural force to be reckoned with. The facts speak for themselves but before you break out the streamers and the party hats-all is not well in the kingdom of comics.

In 1966 the comic "Batman" by itself was the number one selling book for the year. That year, DC, then National, sold an average of 898,470 copies of Batman each month grossing them an average of $96,684 a month at twelve cents an issue. Jump to 2014 and Diamond Comics (the monopoly where every comic book store in America gets it's comics) just released their August 2014 numbers and their top selling book for that month is Batman #34 which sold an estimated 112,186 copies at $3.99 each. That means the gross to DC for that issue will be $447,622, which on the surface sounds great, that's five times 1966's revenue! Dig a little and there are three problems with those numbers: 1) Those 2014 revenues are being produced by an average of 786,284 FEWER readers than in 1966, so the sales pyramid is essentially upside down. Let's skip over dealers over-ordering this non returnable 2014 issue, aka: unsold copies. 2) Adjusted for inflation, those 1966 dollars in 2014 would be $708,556 or almost DOUBLE that of today's sales dollars for Batman #34. 3) In 1966 the book at the bottom of that years sales list was Cheyenne Kid from Charlton Comics. At 94th place, it sold an average of 116,320 copies per month, 4134 copes per month MORE than Batman #34's 2014 estimated sales. Even the worst selling comic in 1966 was moving significantly more paper that the best selling comic of 2014.

Everybody loves comic book characters but there are only a relative few of us who actually support the comic book industry. Two things to remember the next time you're in the cinema or at home enjoying a comic-to-film/tv extravaganza: the attention of the masses isn't trickling down to the comic themselves and THANK YOU for your support.

THIS WEEK'S STANDINGS: If Indy comics are your thing, then this will be a bumper week for you! Overall we're up 6 titles from last week (162 vs 156), however, there are 12 additional Indy titles this week compared to the former. Future Dude, Titan, Legendary & Northwest Press all ship out a deuce of titles apiece this week while Zenescope maintains its wicked ways with three titles being responsible for 11 slots on the list. In the TOP 5 DC is once again on in the lead with 31 titles as the lenticular cover Futures End event for 2014 ends. Marvel holds onto 2nd Place again with 20 titles. IDW climbs to 3rd (finally) by just one title over 4th place Dark Horse (back in the Top 5 this week). Rounding out the group is Image tumbling from 3rd last week to 5th this week with 15 titles. While 3rd through 5th place is only separated by one title each - that title must have a ten buck cover price because that's the dollar amount separating the three companies this week. Finally, second prints return to the schedule with eight new entries-most of which are Indies which brings us full circle.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: DC wraps up 3D MOTION/Lenticular cover month with the final 11 titles this week (22 if you include the Standard Editions). Also ending this week is the Superman Family event Doomed with SUPERMAN DOOMED #2, the bookend to the first issue that started the series. Yes, there will be an "Aftermath" issue with SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #12 on 10/08/14, but the actual story ends here. In addition, wrapping up this week is INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US YEAR TWO #12. Look for YEAR THREE to begin on 10/08/14. Marvel's Amazing Spiderman event "Learning to Crawl" concludes this week with AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1.5, the Red Hulk and the Punisher finally have it out in THUNDERBOLTS #31 and the god of mischief returns and finds himself in the coming AXIS event with LOKI AGENT OF ASGARD #6. IDW re-launches GI JOE yet again - but this time with a heavy dose of estrogen as Scarlett heads up the team. The Baroness gets a lot of cover space and writer Karen Traviss ties it all together. Our Book of the Week is ALIENS FIRE AND STONE #1 from Dark Horse which will tie in with Prometheus and Predator to make for one unified xenomorph universe. Image ships out ROCHE LIMIT #1 which is the first part of a bold sci-fi/noir trilogy and their Top Cow sub-imprint ships the sequel: A VOICE IN THE DARK GET YOUR GUN #1. Around the Indy Pit this week we have BUTTERFLY #1 from Boom which for all the world sounds like a 1000 other "girl trained to be a super cop/soldier/agent/assassin from birth" movies/TV-series. Future Dude ships PARALLEL MAN #1 which I'm betting they had wish they shipped just before DC's Multiversity. Following on the heels of their sold out first issue, Dynamite ships BOBS BURGERS #2 which I still don't get. Finally, if you liked Irwin Allen's 1960's sci-fi series the Time Tunnel you may want to check out FUTURE PROOF #1 from Bliss on Tap. The series will follow two outcast agents who are recruited into a systematic one-way journey back through time. Ultimately, their actions allow for the most monumental events in history to take place. First stop: Dallas Texas, November 1963. Wonder if they will ever run into Butterfly's parents?
