IMPACT UNIVERSITY VOL 05
Writer/Artist: Various
Review By: "Sweet" Dan Sweet
Publisher: Impact University   Available On:   050209
IMPACT'S SYNOPSIS:
IMPACT University Volume 5 is jam-packed with the finest art, instruction and inspiration from the biggest comic creators working today. Look inside the history and madness of comics with IDW editors Scott Tipton and Chris Ryall, find out what makes a comic tick from former Marvel editor Andy Schmidt and get world class art instruction from LucasArts artist Randy Martinez, fantasy guru Bill O'Connor, and Ultimates creator Bryan Hitch. Features exclusive, original cover art from BryanHitch's Ultimate Comics Studio.
SWEET'S REVIEW:
Hey kids, have you ever had big dreams of comic book superstardom? Well don’t waste another moment, on Free Comic Book Day you can pick up the latest edition of Impact Book’s Impact University Volume 5, and get some tips straight from the pros you can use to create your own comic, potentially redefining the medium as a whole forever.

Opening up with an introduction by a comic legend, Marv Wolfman delivers the standard, ‘You can do everything that the greats do, you’re just going to have to work really, really hard” pep-talk, jazzing would-be creators up enough to keep reading. Everything that follows is substantially less about sharing trade secrets than it is about getting you to go buy grossly over-priced ‘How-to’ manuals. There’s an excerpt from Bryan Hitch’s new manual Ultimate Comic Studio, there’s insight from John Romita Jr. from The Insider’s Guide to Creating Comics and Graphic Novels. Ever wanted to know how to draw a creepy gremlin, or a majestic Celtic dragon? Yup they’ve got those kinds of books to shill as well.

To me this is the comic book equivalent of those exercise infomercials featuring gorgeous, sculpted, hard-bodies achieving maximum guides you want, results aren’t guaranteed. Instead of mimicking the style and approach of some of your favorite creators, come up with an original idea and try your hand at executing it in your own way.
WIZARD HOT LIST
Writer: Various, Artist: Various,
Review By: Larry "Bocepheus" Evans
Publisher: Wizard Press,  Available On: 050209
WIZARD'S SYNOPSIS:
The Wizard Hot List springs from the pages of Wizard Entertainment's hottest monthly magazines, including Wizard, ToyFare and Anime Insider, and offers up an array of controversial rankings on the hottest comics, movies, toy, DVDs and video games!
BO'S REVIEW:
This year’s offering from Wizard is as usual a list and this year’s list contains the 50 Best Comic Movies of All Time. The list ends with Constantine at 50 and considers Iron Man to be the best of the best. You can disagree with the order of the list since all lists are subjective but it does have a good mix of independent comic book films as well as films from the big two. The issue also contains an anime insiders’ guide for Death Note, a short but funny Twisted Toyfare Theater, a drawing guide from Kevin Maguire and some of the last sketch drawings from Michael Turner. This is worth picking up just so you can argue about the listing of the films.
"Remember, Saturday May 2nd, 2009 is Free Comic Book Day this year and we're giving away the over 40 titles listed in these pages at the store that weekend. That's a lot of titles and as always some are going to be of more interest to you than others. So take a look at the ALL AGES, TEENS AND UP and REFERENCE offerings for this year and begin to dream about the 2nd Happiest day of the Year (right after Christmas!)
