 Ed
Brubaker is wrapping up a very good summer. He and Sean Phillips’ Image title
Criminal is going strong with Bad Weekend, a graphic novel that covers a 1990s
fictionalized version of San Diego's Comic-Con where a legendary artist is about
to receive a lifetime achievement award but sees everything go wrong. He and
Drive’s Nicolas Winding Refn have a series running on Amazon Prime called Too
Old To Die Young, a LA crime story that mixes the gritty streets of the city
with an atmosphere of neo-noir. Brubaker says that when he and Phillips were
working on the graphic novel My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies he had an urge
to bring Criminal back as a monthly comic. He ended up with five new Criminal
stories, some of which would run one or two issues and some longer. The current
Cruel Summer arc was one of the first ideas he came up with. Bad Weekend came
about as an idea that mixed convention experiences that he and Phillips had and
Brubaker came up with the character of Hal Crane who is a mix of a lot of
veteran artists of that time period. In the regular title the plan is to
continue to visit and revisit moments with the main characters. Cruel Summer
will run until #12 and the next arc may take place in the 50s or 60s. And
Brubaker says he has a big TV project coming up that will be revealed very soon.
