Dini had to come up with a story for Detective Comics #1000 and found one that
would showcase a lot of Batman’s major villains but tell the story in a funny
way. He reached out to his buddy Dustin Nguyen for a story called The Legend of
Knute Brody. The eight-page story has Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and the Riddler
sharing their memories of Knute Brody, a thug who worked for all of them and was
a horrible screw up. Dini’s first idea was to tell a story about Bruce Wayne and
how he works out crimes but that story would be too long and would have taken
place entirely inside Bruce’s head. So instead he came up with a Dateline style
story that showed the levels of henchmen. Harley Quinn, when she started was a
major league henchperson but as you went down the line of Batman villains there
had to be some that were the bottom of the barrel like Brody, who is so
terrified of Batman that when he see him he runs away. The rest of the landmark
issue will contain stories from: Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke; Scott Snyder
and Greg Capullo; Kevin Smith and Jim Lee; Warren Ellis and Becky Cloonan; Denny
O’Neil and Steve Epting; Christopher Priest and Neal Adams; Brian Michael Bendis
and Alex Maleev; Geoff Johns and Kelley Jones; James Tynion IV and Alvaro
Martinez and Tom King, Tony Daniel and Joëlle Jones. The issue will also contain
additional art from Mikel Janín and Amanda Conner and a two-page spread from
Jason Fabok showing the current state of the Batman universe and its heroes and
villains. |
