Once Again a Halo Film Goes Down in Flames While in Pre-Production

Showtime has been trying to get a TV series based on the Halo video game franchise out for a while. The lead character will be Master Chief and the fact that you never see his face in the game has been a hurdle for the series to jump over. Planet of the Apes’ Rupert Wyatt was set to direct the series from a script by Kyle Killen. Killen’s idea for the series was to not repeat any of the stories from the various Halo games but try something that adapted the game into something fans and non-fans would watch. The series will be futuristic space-based science fiction and not fantasy. The plan was for the series to debut in 2020 after actors were hired and the sets were built. The first season would be 10 episodes and all was going smoothly and then Wyatt did the Wyatt thing and dropped out as director and executive producer of the series. He has developed a reputation for joining projects then leaving them. This happened with Gambit. He was supposed to direct multiple episodes. In leaving he made the following statement: "It’s with great disappointment that changes to the production schedule of Halo prevent me from continuing in my role as a director on the series. My time on Halo has been a creatively rich and rewarding experience with a phenomenal team of people. I now join the legion of fans out there, excited to see the finished series and wishing everyone involved the very best." A film version of the game went into development 10 years as a possible film and now over four years in development as a series by Microsoft/343 Industries and Amblin Television.
