 Bleeding
Cool is reporting that a lot of talk at the recent New York Comic Con after the
days events were over at the various bars revolved around Batman: Damned, the
first book from the Black Label imprint. As everyone should know by now Batman
Damned #1 from Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo had a sequence featuring a naked
Bruce Wayne walking through the Batcave with his penis seen but not just out
there. That got media attention more than the fact that we saw more of Bruce’s
ass on the next page than we saw of his penis. The print run was 110,000 and
once it got out what could be seen the book because a huge item for speculators.
DC suddenly announced a second printing but said the second prints would be
censored which made fans look everywhere they could for the first prints. Now DC
Comics new President, Pamela Lifford found herself in the middle of this during
her first week. And so at NYCC, Jim Lee called it a ‘production error’ in a way
to find cover but DC was fully aware of what the content of the book would be
and everything seen in #1 was fully approved. DC is now in survival mode and BC
reports that every DC book is being looked at more closely. Things that were
approved are suddenly not especially with the Black Label books that haven’t
even shipped yet. Batman: Damned #2 has been delayed so that changes can be
made. Batman Damned #1 never got a reprint because the agreement with Brian
Azzarello says the art cannot be censored after publication.
