Ian Fleming's Oddjob will make his debut in Dynamite's James
Bond titles this month starting with the new 007 James Bond title from Greg
Pak and Marc Laming. Their first arc sends 007 to Singapore to secure a smuggled
case that Oddjob wants just as well. Pak knows that Oddjob is a villain that all
remember even with the fact that he’s kind of a stereotype with little
personality or a history. He says she was inspired by something Maxine Hong
Kingston wrote in her book "Tripmaster Monkey". In it her lead Chinese-American
main character went on a rant about Oddjob saying, "A face as big as Oddjob's
should star on the Cinerama screen for the audience to fall in love with, for
girls to kiss, for the nation to cherish, for me to learn how to hold my face.
Take seven pictures of a face, take twelve, twenty of any face, hold it up
there; you will fall in love with it." Pak is of Asian descent himself and in
the films he has made he cast a lot of Asian-American actors and created Amadeus
Cho when he was working on the Hulk. So his Oddjob is just as dangerous and
lethal but will get a background. In the arc he and Bond could be friends or
enemies depending on the situation. Pak’s run on the book will use elements of
the initial Warren Ellis run on Bond. Ellis's Bond was the character from the
books but Pak was a huge fan of the Roger Moore lighter era. Singapore is the
setting for the opening arc so that both Bond and Oddjob would be in unfamiliar
territory facing off against the new terrorist organization ORU. The newly
formed group has killed thousands in a series of attacks without announcing
their philosophy or goals. Since the Dynamite version of Bond has shown him in
different eras fans have speculated that Bond is officially a codename and not a
character but Pak isn’t getting in the middle of all that.
