Actress Goldie Hawn recently revealed in a People interview she had a “casting
couch” moment with “Li’l Abner” comic strip creator/cartoonist Al Capp. She
alleges Capp came into the room “disrobed” and asked for a kiss. “I was 19-and I
was like: ‘You’ve got to be kidding me’ and it was so scary”. She also revealed
Capp opened up his dressing gown and she got a look at his penis. When she
denied his advances, the actress was allegedly told: “Well, you’re never going
to get anywhere in this business, you should go home and marry a Jewish
dentist.” Capp was a vigorous self promoter through out the 50’s and 60’s
appearing on many talk shows including the Tonight Show and the Merv Griffin
Show. His hugely popular “Lil Abner” comic strip (and subsequent Broadway
musical and movie) propelled him into the limelight in much the same way
“Peanuts” made Charles Schultz a household name in the same period. Unlike
Schultz he craved the spotlight and the perks that came with it, he also used
this platform to espouse his far right conservative views during this tumultuous
period in American history. Capp died in 1979 at the age of 70. |
