| Streaming is the Force Shrinking the Theater to DVD

The time between when a film arrives in theaters and then
debuts on DVD or Blu-ray is going to change dramatically in a few years. Get
Out’s producer Jason Blum says that within two years most films will be either
day-and-date theatrical or video-on-demand releases. He believes that this
doesn’t mean films will never be shown only in theaters but a fair amount will
pass movie houses and just be available for home viewing. Blum thinks that
Netflix and Amazon have made distribution more efficient and lead to some films
being made that wouldn’t have if they only had to be a success at theaters.
Warner Brothers studio head Kevin Tsujihara told an audience just recently that
the studio is working on a plan that would have films available on streaming
services two weeks after their debut in theaters. He believes that doing so will
grow the market and kill the film piracy market since you could see a clear
version of a film on your big screen TV instead of looking at a cheap bootleg. |
