WHAT ARE THE EISNER AWARDS?
The Will Eisner Comic Industry Award is given for creative achievement in comic books and is generally referred to as the “Oscars” of the comic book industry. It is named in honor of the pioneering writer and artist Will Eisner (creator of "The Spirit" and several award-winning graphic novels), and they are handed out each year in a ceremony at the San Diego Comic-Con International, the largest and oldest comics convention in the United States. Eisner was a regular participant and presenter in the award ceremony until his death in 2004. The Eisner Award was created in 1988 response to the discontinuation of it’s predecessor the Kirby Awards which ceased in the previous year.

The Awards are given out in more than two dozen categories covering the best publications or outstanding works (ie: Best Short Story, Best Graphic Album, etc.) best creators or individual achievement (ie: Best Writer, Best Artist, etc.) as well as awards for journalism, design and reporting from the previous year. Each category is comprised of nominees chosen by a five-member blue-ribbon panel chosen for that year from through out the comics industry. That panel considers thousands of entries submitted by publishers and creators and narrows the field down to a handful of nominees in each category. Ballots with these nominees are then sent out in the early Spring to comic-book professionals from all parts of the comic industry including: writers, artists, and other creators; publishers; editors; and retailers and distributors (a downloadable pdf of the ballot is also be available online).

The six Hall of Fame inductees each year are picked by the judges (who chose 2 inductees before ballots are sent out) and by the voters themselves (top 4 vote-getters form the nominee list). The results are announced at a gala awards ceremony at the San Diego Comic-Con International.
THE 2009 EISNER AWARDS
JUDGES FOR THIS YEAR...
The 2009 Eisner Awards judging panel consists of...

-Amanda Emmert (owner of Muse Comics & Games in Missoula, MT)
  -
Mike Pawuk (teen services public librarian for the Cuyahoga, Ohio County Public Library)
-John Shableski (Diamond Book Distributors sales manager)
-Ben Towle (graphic novelist and comics arts educator)
-Andrew Wheeler (comics and manga reviewer at ComixMix.com)
AWARD CHANGES FOR THIS YEAR...
This year's judges choose to change the balloting, resulting in the elimination of the Best Single Issue category and the Special Recognition category. They also combined the Best Writer/Artist–Humor category into the Best Writer/Artist category. Conversely they chose to expand the content for the Best Publication for Teens category to now be the Best Publication for Teens/Tweens category. These changes brought the number of award categories down to 26 (three less than 2008).
THIS YEAR'S CEREMONY...
Ballots will be going out in mid-April to comics creators, editors, publishers, and retailers. A downloadable pdf of the ballot will also be available online, and a special website has been set up for online voting. The results in all categories will be announced in a gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday, July 24 at Comic-Con International.
